Prakashrao Abitkar, a prominent Shiv Sena (SHS) leader, began his political journey at the grassroots level in Kolhapur district, Maharashtra. Born into a working-class family, Abitkar entered public life early, contesting his first election as an independent candidate for the Gargoti Panchayat Samiti at just 21 years old in 1997, where he won with a significant majority. He later served as Vice President of the Panchayat Samiti and as a member of the Kolhapur Zilla Parishad from 2002 to 2007, gaining valuable experience in local governance.

Abitkar’s activism included founding the “Yuva Sangharsh” organization to address pending issues in Radhanagari and leading several local agitations and marches for justice. His first attempt at the Maharashtra Assembly in 2009 saw him secure over 36,000 votes, establishing his presence in regional politics. In 2014, he contested on a Shiv Sena ticket and achieved a landmark victory, defeating a two-time NCP MLA and marking the party’s first major win in the constituency.

2. Current Political Role

Currently, Prakashrao Abitkar serves as the MLA from Radhanagari constituency, Kolhapur district, Maharashtra, representing Shiv Sena (SHS). He is in his third consecutive term (2014–2029) in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, a rare achievement in the region. Abitkar has also held the position of Cabinet Minister in the Maharashtra government, making him the first from Radhanagari to do so. His legislative contributions include active participation in debates, securing development funds, and serving on key committees. He enjoys strong public support and has consistently won elections with record margins.

3. Social Work and Community Engagement

Abitkar is recognized for his deep engagement in social work and community development. He played a pivotal role in establishing the Shri Anand Rao Abitkar Agricultural and Engineering College in Gargoti, expanding educational opportunities for local youth. He facilitated the construction of a ₹23 crore sub-district hospital in Kasba Tarale, improving healthcare access in rural Kolhapur. His efforts in irrigation include the Mudalte Minche canal project and the Megholi Bandhara, benefitting thousands of farmers and residents. Abitkar is also involved in cooperative institutions like the Kolhapur District Bank and the Gokul dairy, leveraging these platforms for constituency development.

Abitkar has championed youth empowerment through educational initiatives and skill development programs. The establishment of local colleges and support for student scholarships have been central to his agenda. He has also advocated for women’s self-help groups (SHGs) and supported rural women’s entrepreneurship, contributing to economic independence and social upliftment.

5. Election Performance and Campaign Style

Since 2014, Abitkar has contested and won three consecutive Maharashtra Assembly elections from Radhanagari, each time increasing his victory margin and solidifying his status as a grassroots leader. His campaign style blends traditional outreach—padayatras, public meetings—with modern digital engagement, focusing on direct voter contact and issue-based slogans.

Abitkar is widely regarded as a “grassroots karyakarta” with a clean public image. He is often referred to respectfully as “Abitkar Saheb” in Kolhapur district and is recognized in media for his development work and effective crisis management. His speeches and interviews frequently highlight local issues, earning him a reputation as a people’s leader.

7. Associations and Leadership Roles

Beyond the Assembly, Abitkar has held leadership roles in the Kolhapur District Bank and the Gokul dairy cooperative. His earlier experience as a Zilla Parishad member and Panchayat Samiti vice president provided a strong foundation for his state-level leadership.

Prakashrao Abitkar has received several honors, including the Rajarshi Shahu Award and the Adarsh Yuva MLA Award, recognizing his legislative performance and social initiatives. His contributions have been acknowledged by civil society and local organizations.
