Diganta Barman was born on November 26, 1964, in Assam to the family of Late Dr. Bhumidhar Barman, a prominent political leader and former Chief Minister of Assam. His mother is Malati Barman. Raised with values of integrity, service, and community, Diganta credits his family background for instilling deep social responsibility and empathy.

Barman completed his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Gauhati University in 1987. Before entering politics, he was an Assam Civil Services (ACS) officer, which provided him with a strong foundation in administrative and leadership skills. Deeply influenced by the principles of equality, inclusivity, and justice, he embraces a rights-based approach in his public and personal life.

He is married to Kasturi Bharali, an Assam Civil Service officer currently serving as Secretary to the Government of Assam in the Skill, Employment, and Entrepreneurship department. They have three daughters: Kamakshi Barman, Bhargaavii Barman, and Rijuta Barman. Despite a demanding political career, Diganta values family bonds and nurtures close relationships, often attributing his personal growth to the support of his loved ones.
