He completed his senior secondary education at Kamrup Academy School, Guwahati in 1985. He then earned a Bachelor of Arts (1990) and Master of Arts (1992) in Political Science from Cotton College, Guwahati, where he was thrice elected General Secretary of the Cotton College Students’ Union. Later, Sarma obtained an L.L.B degree from Government Law College, Guwahati, and practiced law at Gauhati High Court from 1996 to 2001. He also earned a Ph.D. in Political Science from Gauhati University, which helped develop his analytical and leadership abilities.


Himanta Biswa Sarma is married to Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, a businesswoman and Managing Director of Pride East Entertainments Pvt. Ltd. They have two children—Nandil Biswa Sarma and Sukanya Sarma—who have attended prestigious schools in India.
