K. Babu, born on 2 June 1951 in Angamaly, Ernakulam district, Kerala, began his political career with the Kerala Students Union (KSU) in 1966. He was the first and youngest Chairman of the Angamaly Municipal Council. He served as Director of Kerala Plantation Corporation and Kerala State Consumer Federation and was Vice-Chairman of Kerala University Union. Babu held roles such as President of Youth Congress Block and District Committees and General Secretary of Ernakulam District Congress Committee. He was elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly first in 1991 from Tripunithura and subsequently served multiple terms and also held the position of Minister for Fisheries, Ports, and Excise (2011–2016).
