She completed her schooling in Thondamuthur and earned an undergraduate degree in Chemistry from PSG College of Arts and Science. Subsequently, she graduated with a law degree from Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College, Chennai, in 1993, and a master's degree in International Constitution Law from the University of Madras in 1995. She married Srinivasan and has two sons.
Vanathani has practiced law at the Madras High Court since 1993, also working as standing counsel for Southern Railway and the Union Government.
