Kunhambu, born on 20 August 1959 in Bedadka, Kasaragod district, Kerala, began his political career as a student leader in Balasangam and later held important roles in the Students' Federation of India (SFI) such as Taluk Secretary and District Vice President. He served as District President of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) for Kasaragod between 1984 and 1990. Kunhambu steadily rose through the ranks of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], becoming Area Secretary and a member of the District Secretariat.
