Chennithala began his political life during his school days as the Kerala Students Union (KSU) Chennithala High School Unit Secretary in 1970. He rose through ranks in KSU and later became the All India President of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) in 1982. That year, he was also elected as MLA from Haripad constituency. At 28, he became Kerala’s youngest Minister of Rural Development in 1986. He subsequently held important posts including General Secretary of Indian Youth Congress, Member of Parliament (MP) representing Kottayam and Mavelikkara, and President of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (2005-2014).

Ramesh Ramakrishnan Chennithala was born on May 25, 1956, in Chennithala, Mavelikara, Kerala, into the family of Shri V. Ramakrishnan Nair and Smt. Devakiamma, known for their social commitment and community values. He completed his education with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Economics and completed LLB courses, which laid the foundation for his analytical and leadership capabilities. Chennithala is married to Anita Ramesh, who works as a development officer.
