Rahul Mamkootathil is a young Indian political leader from Kerala, serving as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the Palakkad constituency. He is affiliated with the Indian National Congress (INC), marking a significant presence in Kerala's political landscape. Born on November 12, 1989, in Adoor, Pathanamthitta district, Rahul's political journey began in 2006 through student activism with the Kerala Students Union (KSU). Rising steadily, he has held various leadership roles including KSU state general secretary, National Students' Union of India (NSUI) national secretary, and state president of the Indian Youth Congress in Kerala in 2023.
Rahul Mamkootathil won the 2024 Palakkad by-election with a historic margin of 18,840 votes, reflecting strong public support. Rahul Mamkootathil, born on November 12, 1989, in Mundapally, Adoor, in Kerala's Pathanamthitta district, comes from a family with political background; his paternal great-uncle is senior Congress leader Thennala Balakrishna Pillai, and his father, S Rajendra Kurup, served in the Indian Army. Raised with values of service, integrity, and social commitment, Rahul credits his upbringing for instilling empathy and dedication to public welfare.
He completed his education at Thapovan Public School, Adoor, and St. John's School, Pandalam, followed by a B.A. in History from Catholicate College, Pathanamthitta. He earned postgraduate degrees in English Literature from IGNOU and History from St. Stephen's College, Delhi. Rahul is currently pursuing a PhD at Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam.
His political career began in 2006 as a member of the Kerala Students Union (KSU) during his undergraduate studies. He rose through ranks, serving as KSU president for Adoor constituency, Pathanamthitta district president, Kerala state general secretary, and National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) national secretary. In 2023, he became the state president of the Indian Youth Congress, Kerala. Rahul won the 2024 Palakkad by-election with a historic margin of 18,840 votes.
