R. Bindu, a senior leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], is currently serving as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Irinjalakuda constituency in Thrissur district, Kerala. She holds the important ministerial portfolios of Higher Education and Social Justice in the Kerala government. Born on May 31, 1967, in Kodungallur to N. Radhakrishnan and K.K. Shanthakumari, Bindu entered politics through student activism with the Students' Federation of India (SFI). She was the first woman mayor of the Thrissur Municipal Corporation and is the first woman MLA from Irinjalakuda.
Bindu served as Vice Principal and Head of the English Department at Sree Kerala Varma College, Thrissur and has been an influential member of the Calicut University Syndicate, Senate, and Academic Council. She holds an MA in English Literature, MPhil from Jawaharlal Nehru University, and a PhD from Calicut University. She is an accomplished poet, writer, and a trained Bharatanatyam and Kathakali artist.
Her political career is distinguished by advocacy for women's empowerment, youth development, social justice, and educational advancements. She is also a central executive committee member of the All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) and holds key roles in the CPI(M) Thrissur District Committee. R. Bindu was born on May 31, 1967, in Kodungallur, Thrissur district, Kerala, into the family of N. Radhakrishnan and K. K. Shanthakumari, known for their strong community values and social responsibility. She completed her education at Irinjalakuda Girls' High School and St. Joseph's College, Irinjalakuda, earning an MA in English Literature with third rank. She pursued further studies with an MPhil in Marxist Literary Criticism and Semiotics from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and a PhD from Calicut University, where she researched feminist literary theories. Her academic journey laid a strong foundation for her analytical and leadership abilities. Deeply influenced by Indian reformers and committed to equality and justice, she champions a rights-based approach in all aspects of life.
Bindu is married to A. Vijayaraghavan, senior CPI(M) leader and former MP, and they have a son named Harikrishnan. Despite her busy political career, she maintains close family bonds and attributes much of her personal growth to the support of her family.
Known for her modest and grounded lifestyle, Bindu values meaningful interactions over public display. She is passionate about arts and culture, having trained in Bharatanatyam for a decade and Kathakali for 13 years. She is also an accomplished poet and writer in English and Malayalam.
