Pinarayi Vijayan was born on May 24, 1945, in Pinarayi village, Kannur district, Kerala, as the youngest son of Shri Maroli Koran and Smt. Alakkatt Kalyani. He was raised in a modest family known for its hardworking, leftist, and secular values. Growing up with 14 siblings, Vijayan’s early life was marked by financial struggles and the early loss of his father, which instilled in him a strong sense of perseverance, social responsibility, and empathy.
He completed his schooling at Pinarayi Saradavilasam Lower Primary School and Peralassery High School. Vijayan worked as a handloom weaver for a year before joining Government Brennen College, Thalassery, where he earned a B.A. degree in Economics. His education fostered his analytical and leadership skills, and he was deeply influenced by the principles of equality, inclusivity, and justice prevalent in Indian reform movements.
Pinarayi Vijayan is married to Kamala Vijayan, a retired teacher known for her dignified and low-profile public presence.
