Basavaraj Somappa Bommai (born 28 January 1960) is an Indian politician and engineer who served as the 23rd Chief Minister of Karnataka from 18 July 2021 to 19 May 2023. He is currently a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and was previously a member of the Janata Dal and Janata Dal (United).

Bommai started his political career as a member of the Janata Dal in 1992. While in Janata Dal, he worked with senior politicians of the Janata Dal like H. D. Deve Gowda and Ramakrishna Hegde. He later also served as a political secretary to then Chief Minister J. H. Patel.

Bommai contested the 1994 Karnataka legislative assembly elections from Hubli Rural constituency as a member of the Janata Dal. However, he lost the election to Jagadish Shettar of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Bommai was elected as a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council in 1998 from Dharwad local authorities constituency as a member Janata Dal. After the dissolution of the Janata Dal, he joined the Janata Dal (United). Later in 2004, he was re-elected from Dharwad local authorities constituency as a member Janata Dal (United).

He quit the Janata Dal (United) in February 2008 and later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in the same month of the year.

Basavaraj Somappa Bommai is the current Chief Minister of Karnataka and a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was elected three times to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly for Shiggaon constituency since 2008.

He has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from BVB College of Engineering, Hubli and worked for Tata Motors in Pune for three years before starting his entrepreneurial journey by setting up various manufacturing industries in Karnataka.

Bommai served as Minister for Water Resources and Cooperation from 2008 to 2013, and Minister of Home Affairs, Co-operation, Law and Justice, Parliamentary Affairs and Legislature of Karnataka in the Fourth Yediyurappa ministry. He is known for his contributions to irrigation schemes and implementing India’s first 100% piped irrigation project at Shiggaon in Haveri district of Karnataka.

Basavaraj Somappa Bommai is an Indian politician and the current Chief Minister of Karnataka. He had started his politics with Janta Dal but later shifted to Bharatiya Janta Party. He is currently also serving as the Minister of state for Home Affairs, Law, Parliamentary Affairs and Legislature of Karnataka. He is also the in-charge minister of Haveri District. In past, he had served as Minister for Water resources and Cooperation in the Government of Karnataka.

Basavaraj Bommai comes from a political background as he's the son of former Chief Minister of Karnataka, S. R. Bommai. A graduate in Mechanical Engineering, he started his political journey with Janta Dal and represented Dharwad constituency twice in Karnataka Vidhan Soudha as a Janta Dal MLA and also worked as the Parliament Secretary to Chief Minister.

In 2008, he shifted the side and joined Bharatiya Janta Party. He won 2008 Karnataka MLA election on a BJP ticket and appointed as the Minister for Water Resources. He has been serving as the Minister for Cooperation, Minister of Law and Parliamentary Affairs and Minister of Home Affairs, ever since the BJP came again into power in the state before sworn in as the new Chief Minister as B S Yediyurappa stepped down from the post.
