Sagar started his political career with Bahujan Samaj Party. In 2006, he became the district president of the party's Shahjahanpur district unit. He became the vice-president of the state construction corporation in the following year. In 2009, he was fired by his party for allegedly involving in anti-party activities. Nevertheless, he returned to the party and contested the 2012 assembly election from Powayan constituency. He was defeated by more than 50,000 votes. On 15 June 2015, he was re-fired by his party for anti-party activities
